History: Named after the Reverend Samuel Windsor. Windsor is located between Greeley and Fort Collins just East of I-25. The Town of Windsor had it's beginnings in the early 1870's when investors came via the railroad to grow and produce wheat. Wheat production lead to the town's first commercial "flour mill". Unfortunately the mill burned down in 1899 and the Windsor Millings and Elevator Co took it's place. The platting of Windsor actually began in 1882 in conjunction with the construction of the Windsor Railroad Depot. Then in the 1900's sugar beet production gradually replaced the wheat industry and in 1903 a sugar beet factory was constructed. This industry grew rapidly requiring a large number of laborers and the birth of the Great Western Sugar Company. As nothing lasts forever the sugar company closed in the mid 1960's fueled by a downturn in the economy. Soon after the sugar factory closing, Kodak opened and once again created growth of the area. Today this is a town of rapid urban growth especially with the wind turbine industry of Vestas in the backyard of Windsor. From the Coloradoan: While Fort Collins home builders have been plagued by a lack of inventory and rising costs, Windsor is on pace to issue more single-family home Windsor CO Housing permits than ever before. In the first half of the year, Windsor issued 317 single-family home permits, more than Fort Collins, Loveland and Greeley. For comparison, Fort Collins issued 288 permits during the same time period. If the trend holds, this could be the first year since 2011 that Windsor has issued more permits for new single-family homes than Fort Collins, according to the town's July Community Development Report. Already this year, Windsor has doubled the number of single-family building permits issued for the same time period last year. Much of the new housing development in Windsor has come from the Village East and Peakview Estates subdivisions. Homes listed in these two subdivisions reportedly range from $274,900 to $369,000. less
