The South Capitol neighborhood is what it says - it is just south of the Capitol building and campus. The South Capitol neighborhood with its tree-lined streets and sidewalks, architecture that is reminiscent of "grandma's house," the extensive gardens and landscaping, and the semi-urban feel attract many buyers to this area. The South Capitol neighborhood was designated a National Register Historic District in 1991. When you walk through this neighborhood, you'll notice round bronze plaques on some of the homes, identifying them as historic homes. The oldest home in the neighborhood was built in 1878, located at 202 East 21st Street. Other homes were owned by prominent business people and politicians and were built in the early 1900s.
