With the explosive growth of the west side of Bakersfield over the past three decades, it's easy to forget about the east side of town. The east side of Bakersfield is rich in diversity and is a wonderful part of town to call home! But let's talk about northeast Bakersfield, known to some as "the hill". I've lived in Bakersfield since 1967, and almost that entire time I have lived on the hill. I went to school here and graduated from Highland High School. I've lived in the same house for 24 years. On my street are the best neighbors a person could ask for! Northeast Bakersfield has a slower pace than the west side; less traffic, fewer crowded places, a more laid-back feel all around. As the nickname implies, there are hills. That might come as a surprise for those that have only traveled through Bakersfield on Highway 99, or have always lived west of that freeway, where it's as flat as Texas. On many foggy days, when everything from downtown to the west is bogged down in the infamous Tule fog, we rise above it. The extra elevation also allows for some incredible views from the right property, looking out across the valley. And then there's the breeze. When the rest of the city is stagnant, there is almost always a breeze on the hill. It makes it a little more bearable on those warm days that Bakersfield is infamous for. It's still an easy drive to get to the west side where all the newest attractions, restaurants, and stores seem to appear. And it's an easy drive to get back to the calmer, breezier, relaxed atmosphere that is northeast Bakersfield. And that is why I live "On the Hill".
