Brunswick's Old Town historic district is the remnant of the old colonial British town established in 1771. Old Town's grid-planned streets allow easy touring through the neighborhoods, which are filled with Victorian homes and stately live oak trees dripping of Spanish moss. One of those oaks being the 900 year old "Lover's Oak" at the corner of Prince and Albany Street. According to local lore, Lover's Oak was a favorite romantic rendezvous for young Native American lovers, who lived in the area long before the British colonists. In addition to historic Lover's Oak, Old Town also includes the history of Oak Grove Cemetery, a number of parks, and the Marshes of Glynn immortalized in Sidney Lanier's poem by the same name. Downtown's main shopping and dining are also located within the historic district and include great shops and dining like Tait's Lawn Products, Southern Hanger, Fox's Pizza Den, and Tipsy McSways just to name a few. The downtown historic district is the venue of many fun festivals and events throughout the year including PorchFest, Rockin' Stewbilee, Peaches to Beaches Annual Yard Sale, Brunswick Art Walk, First Fridays each month, and an ongoing Farmer's Market at Mary Ross Park. Being situated along the coast with the two barrier islands of St. Simons and Jekyll, and great weather throughout the year, recreational activities abound. Activities include kayaking, golfing, paddle boarding, dolphin tours, exploring the beautiful Atlantic beaches, shrimp boat outings, boating, sailing, bike tours, bird watching, and many, many more. Old Town has two public schools in the district, Glynn Middle School and Glynn Academy, which is the second oldest public high school in Georgia (established by the Georgia General Assembly in 1788), and it is the seventh oldest public high school in the nation. Elementary age children attend St. Simons Elementary School, which is located on St. Simons Island. Most of Old Town's homes consist of 19th century Victorians, bungalows, cute coastal cottages, and the occasional modern home here and there. Once again I am positively overwhelmed with the support in our community. People coming together to help each other clean up after Hurricane Irma. I see so many offers to help and I see so many people out there actually doing it. This storm may have been a tough experience but it has reminded me of why I am so proud to be a part of this community. less
