The 19th Ward As a child I always heard my mother talk about the 19th ward and how much she loved her childhood growing up in the 19th ward. She would tell stories of the city and how it was in the forties through early sixties. So I have always been partial to the 19th ward because I knew how much she loved it. Today the 19th ward has approximately somewhere around 22,000 residents. The 19th Ward is the largest neighborhood community in the city. Due to the size of the community, many people not familiar with the area confuse the 19th Ward with the Southwest Quadrant as a whole. The Southwest West Quadrant, is also called Sector 4, and actually contains five other neighborhoods. (the Plymouth-Exchange community in particular is often mistaken for part of the 19th Ward.) The 19th Ward boarders are: clockwise from its northern edge, by West Avenue, Genesee Street, Scottsville Road, and to the Erie Canal. The southeastern portion is called Brooks Landing and is connected to the University of Rochester River Campus, which there is a pedestrian bridge over the Genessee river to the U of R. The 19th Ward neighborhoods consists of many tree-lined streets filled with one and two family homes and a scattering of small apartment complexes. The neighborhood prides itself on its racial, ethnic and economic diversity. Intermingled through neighborhoods living amongst each other you will find university professors, doctors, students, city officials, as well as some of the cities poorest families all live in the 19th Ward. On Thurston Rd you will even find a religious compound and a retirement home in close proximity. Aberdeen Square Park is a popular green space, while Genesee Valley Park touches the neighborhood's southern edge. The 19th Ward is well serviced by public transportation with the city bus system and includes three exits on Interstate 390 (17, 18B and 19). It is also close to RIT, St. Mary's Hospital, the Greater Rochester International Airport, and the main campus of the University of Rochester Medical Center, Strong Hospital. Similar to the South Wedge but on the westside of the river, 19th Ward offers close proximity to the UofR campus. Rents in the 19th Ward are much cheaper, however, and the area is much more residential in nature. The value of homes for sale in the 19th ward also are significant lower than homes for sale in the South Wedge and other neighboring communities areas surrounding the U of R and Strong Hospital. Most of the homes in the 19th ward were built between 1880-1940 and were originally intended for the working professionals of Rochester: the doctors, lawyers, dentists and the like. As such, most homes have maintained their architectural heritage. Oak floors and Gumwood trim are very common, uniformity over time owners and often landlords have painted or carpeted over them and new homeowners may have to replace a lot of outdated carpeting, tile and/or paint. Investment by businesses and but specifically by efforts of the University of Rochester and the City of Rochester, there has been great improvements in the 19th ward revitalize the great history of the 19th ward.
