    Did you know that February is National Healthy Heart Month? Because home is where the heart is, we're taking this opportunity to share some information about heart health.

    These days, it’s probably more important than ever to think about your heart health. We’re all subject to stress, unhealthy diet, and poor lifestyle choices that can take a serious toll on the ol’ ticker.

    Here are three ways that may improve the health of your heart everyday.

    Reduce Trans Fats-

    Research shows that you need healthy fats in your diet, and you can find them in foods like nuts, avocado, coconut oil, and omega-3s.  Medical research has also found that there are certain fats that are unhealthy: trans fats. These fats are most common in foods like cakes, pies, cookies, breakfast sandwiches, margarine, lots of fast food, pizza, donuts, and even microwave popcorn.

    Health experts say they can clog your arteries by raising your bad cholesterol levels and increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. One way doctors advise their patients to focus on heart health is to cut back on foods with trans fats, or better yet, cut them out of your diet completely. Your heart will thank you.

    Skip The Late Show-

    Not sleeping enough can cause a litany of problems, including some for your heart. Recent research shows an increased risk of heart attack and stroke in adults over forty-five who get less than six hours of sleep per night compared to those who get eight hours of uninterrupted sleep. A lack of healthy sleep can cause inflammation and blood pressure problems in the long run, which put great stress on the function of your heart.

    Second Hand Smoke-

    We all know the dangers of smoking. They’ve been documented for years. What many of us might not recognize as a significant threat to our health and the health of our loved ones is the risk posed by secondhand smoke. The American Heart Association claims second hand smoke is a contributor to heart disease and lung cancer. People who don’t smoke but have high blood pressure or cholesterol are put at greater risk of heart disease from second hand smoke. So try to avoid situations that expose you or your family to secondhand smoke.

    These are just a few things you might want to consider as possible ways to improve the health of your heart. And they aren't just good for healthy heart month, but all year long!
